I like this math textbook. The quality of the book itself is good, and the material inside is full of colorful and can be applied to the real world. However, the CD that came with the text does not work on my Mac which is only a couple of years old. It says its compatible with my OS but the program will not launch.

Warning NO EXTRAs - anon_2003 - usa
This is a very informative textbook and the college I'm studying at uses it for Calculus 1, 2 and 3, so it's not a bad deal.

However, it does NOT come with the promised TEC CD-ROM, CD with interactive skill builder and iLrn. I complained and Amazon sent a 2nd new book but it didn't have the extras either. There was nothing more they could do. I went to the publishers site to buy them and could not find where to buy them, so I guess I'm out.

Buyer beware - this is probably one to buy at your campus bookstore so you can see what you're getting.

Another College Textbook - Kelly Christensen - Northern California
I have found that it is much cheaper to buy in two volumes, which is a plus as well as it being a little less weight to carry. As far as a book goes, it is merely another college textbook with dry writing that I have found mostly useful when I skip to formulas and homework problems. The examples, however, tend to be fairly confusing and not very well explained. Unless you are EXTREMELY self motivated, which I suppose you would have to be to teach yourself calculus, I would only suggest buying to coincide with a course.

Infinate Incomprihensibility - Dragonlord - The Moon
The problem with this book is their explanations: they often explain nothing, and their example problems, which are often ridiculously simple while the accompanying problems are ridiculously complex and difficult, leaving you with little idea of how to solve the problem or even what they want you too accomplish. Add in the assumption factor: the book references equations or mathematical concepts not in the book and simply 'assumes' you have the knowledge, and the shortcut factor (examples sometimes condense several steps into one line, leaving no way to separate what did what) and you have a bad way to learn math.

Here's the biggest clue. I often resort to Google to learn the math when attempting the assignments. If I use other sources to learn the math, why should I (or you) ever buy this book?

I have read (almost) nothing but negative reviews about this book. I used this book for Single and Multi-Variable Calculus and had no problem with it at all.
This book isn't the end-all Calculus book, but I will say that being someone who always thought of himself as "non-mathematically inclined," I had no trouble at all with the theorems, proofs or examples Stewart provides.
It's not too complex, it doesn't skip steps (usually) and it is very thorough.

if only there was a "zero stars" option - Frances E. Klein - Cincinnati, OH
I am attempting to learn calculus for the first time. I did wonderfully in pre-calculus, but this horrible book (and my thickly accented disorganized professor) have forced me to withdraw from the class and try again later.

The author appears to be writing for other calculus teachers who already understand the material. The writing is incredibly confusing. The examples are not very helpful. The questions at the end of the sections are too few, and do not do a good job of building up difficulty. I find that it is easier to learn math concepts if you have a large quantity of problems to work on that start simple and progressively add more difficult aspects to them.

If you are a professor thinking about using this book for your class, PLEASE RECONSIDER! If you are student with the misfortune of having to use this book for your class, hopefully your professor speaks so that you can understand him/her and maybe get another calc book to actually LEARN SOMETHING FROM.

Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals - Melinda Legatt -
Like so many others wrote, the book stinks. It is an expensive piece of garbage. I can't believe professors use this textbook and I HATE the fact that my college does. If you read the textbook, you will notice that in its explanations that it omits some steps, leaving the user to wonder how they got their (They don't show you, they don't tell you. This is a textbook that should be collected and burned so no student would ever have to use it again. Also, as students, we have professors who assign homework problems from this book but when we try to do the problems we don't know how because the book doesn't give examples of the questions asked in the homework! It is driving me nuts and I hold a grudge against every professor who dares use this textbook. (Try not to spend your money on this piece of garbage if you don't have to; HUGE waste of money.) I also agree with those who mentioned Larson, much better textbook choice.
