Consider the number line. It is very symmetrical. Zero is in the middle, with the positive numbers to the right, and the negative numbers to the left. But that symmetry rapidly breaks down under multiplication; if multiplication were symmetrical then multiplying two negative numbers should produce another negative number, but it doesn't. The symmetry breaks down even more when you take square roots. The square root of 4 is plus or minus 2. The square root of -4 isn't even a real number; it is plus or minus 2i. Here is another violation of the symmetry of the number line : 2^2 is 4, but -2^-2 is 1/4. That is weird.

Martinez develops an algebra that restores the symmetry of the number line under multiplication, while simultaneously dispensing with imaginary numbers. All you have to do is change the rule of multiplication so that a negative number times a negative number is still negative. Now the square root of -4 is -2. This also gets rid of the double roots for square numbers. It also makes -2^-2 = -4.

This algebra runs into some problems. For one thing, multiplication is not commutative. This seems odd, but we're already familiar with non commutative operations. Some examples include subtraction, division, and matrix multiplication. Martinez smoothes over this issue and a couple other potential pitfalls. He also shows that you can actually create simpler solutions to some problems in mathematics. Martinez's algebra also does a better job of corresponding to the real world. Thinking of negative numbers as "moving in the other direction" results in an arithmetic that does a better job of applying to the real world.

I would highly recommend this book because I'll never think of mathematics, or numbers, in the same way again. Martinez's experiment really forces you to think about what numbers mean, and what possible real world or geometric interpretation they may have. But having said that, I think his experiment is destined to be a failure.

Here is an example of how Martinez's algebra breaks down. 5 = (10 - 5), so 5 x 5 should be the same as (10 - 5) x (10 - 5). But according to Martinez's algebra, it is 75 (you can work this out - use the sign of the first number only for the inner terms). This experiment also provides insight into how negative numbers might work. We can think of -5 x -5 as ( 0 - 5) x (0 - 5) = 25. But according to Martinez's algebra, it is defined to be -25. [UPDATE: Martinez kindly explains in the comment that the artificial algebra uses a different distribution rule than traditional algebra, a nuance that I missed in this review)

Martinez's algebra also breaks down because you cannot use logarithms as a shorthand for division. Lets pick an easy example to demonstrate the point, dividing 4 by 8. The way you do this is to express them both to a common base and subtract the exponents. So you get log( 2^2 ) - log( 2^3 ) = log( 2^-1 ) = -1. Then you use re-exponentiate to get your answer. In traditional algebra, 2^-1 = 1/2 = 4/8. That is the correct answer. But with Martinez's algebra, 2^-1 = -2, which is the wrong answer.

I should point out at this point that Martinez successfully works out a few kinks that originally appear as though they would doom his system. So it is quite possible that someone with more mathematical maturity could figure out a way around these obstacles. But my instinct is that Martinez's system has run into a dead end. The real lesson I have taken from the experiment is that math isn't easy to bend, but I thoroughly enjoyed the attempt.

the author claims that there's no device which measures an imaginary number; well, for EE's, an imaginary number (phasor) can be measured with an oscilloscope since oscilloscopes can measure amplitude and phase; this representation can then be converted to an imaginary number. the author also claims that you can't have -5 apples in a box and this seems sinister since -5, for example, would mean that there's an IOU in the box after the vender had 5 apples and bartered 10 apples for something he wanted. in this case, when the vender got a dozen more apples, 5 of them would be owed. perhaps I should read more than amazon's sample pages but the ones I read didn't seem that complete.

I will leave out information that I feel other reviewers have already mentioned and just concentrate on a few points.

This writing really is wonderful, in my opinion. I think that, as a popular writing it is certainly accessible to the general public, but simplicity can be deceptive. The topics may not involve dense opaque notation and detailed treatment from abstract algebra, but if such approaches were resulted to, there would not have been any room to really deal with the historical, philosophical, and physical implications of new algebras. Often texts of that nature present the subject in its most compact form, which is rather out of step with any true learning process which gains an intuitive understanding first, and then builds up in layers upon the first insights, questioning and reworking as the process continues. I feel that the comment by one reviewer that the author is in error by not discussing the topic in abstract algebra form (that would, coincidentally make the book utterly incomprehensible to the common reader) is symptomatic of what happens when someone becomes very proficient at a subject and completely loses all touch with the reality of the people who don't have her/his expertise. It is not the job of this book to take that approach. That is your job. Take the ideas and fly with them, or reject them; either which way, I think you will come away from it with a deeper perspective. Even mathematicians dealing with hypercomplex algebras could deal with a short retreat to consider these basic ideas anew.

I am thankful to Mr. Martinez for writing this book. I hope it is well received.

BAD TEXTBOOK - Palmi91 -
Besides the fact that going through the textbook actually feels a bit like sifting through word-vomit about math, there are also plenty of other faults with which Single Variable Calculus tries to take up as much of your time as possible before teaching you anything !

1. The examples are often too simple when compared to the second half of the problems for each chapter.
2. The examples for each chapter often do not explain how to do all the different types of problems that come up in the problems sets.
3. As if that isn't enough to sufficiently confuse you, let's not forget the most major fault with the book - about half the time the examples just randomly skip steps without even indicating it, basically punching holes in any life-boats you might have still been clinging to.

What Stewart does succeed in doing is proving the stereotypical image of a "math person" right in that he can certainly solve highly complex math problems, but cannot pass on the knowledge of HOW to do so to save his life. But, to be fair, if you actually manage to go through the word vomit, you will note that it is not for lack of trying.

Please, ignore the five star ratings for this book. They should be directed at Amazon or other distributors, and have no bearing on the content of this text. Instead, they relate to the timely and safe manner in which the text was transported. I have worked with this text for a little over a year now, in two calculus courses. I sincerely agree with the reviews by individuals who have ACTUALLY read the text, instead of simply buying it and staring at the package. This book is atrocious. The examples are far from helpful. An instance: In the chapter on integrals the book uses an example to teach the definition of the integral with an ESTIMATION. It estimates the area of a portion of the area under the curve to be a certain number and then calculates this along with other information to come to it's answer. If I am learning something, I don't want to be taught through estimates, I want clear concise directions that can be repeated without deviation or error. As well, only a single problem is shown, with very little true explanation. More detailed explanation of at least three different problems per topic would be preferable, so a student can then gain a more confident and clear understanding. Similar examples of this book's tedious and unclear nature are common within it's pages. I hope in future editions these changes are made.

This book intends to be an easy, concise, but rather complete introduction to the ISO/ANSI C++ language, with applications to object oriented numeric computation for students and professionals in science and engineering. It introduces concepts, techniques, and standard libraries of C++ in a manner that is easy to understand using examples such as vectors, matrices, complex numbers, and integrals, which are familiar and useful to a typical student or professonal in science and engineering.

Besides introducing basic and advanced features of C++, the book contains an introduction and C++ programs for many numeric methods such as polynomial interpolation, numerical integration, direct and iterative algorithms for solving systems of linear equations in real and complex domains, methods for solving nonlinear equations, ordinary and partial differential equations with real and complex coefficients. These methods are fundamental in scientific and engineering computing.

This book gives numerous examples and techniques on how to reduce (C and Fortran style) run-time overhead and improve program efficiency and elegancy. Such techniques include function objects, deferred evaluation for operator overloading, expression templates, template metaprograms, and replacing certain virtual functions by templates. It also introduces tools on how to manage source files, create libraries, and debug and profile programs.

The book can be used as a textbook for students in science and engineering and a reference book for experienced scientific C++ programmers.

C++, What a Programming Language Should Be!

C++'s object oriented and general programming features enable the programmer to write few codes and support an evolving process of code development. For example, One version of C++ program of preconditioned conjugate gradient and GMRES methods can be used for full (storing every entry of a matrix), banded (zero entries outside of a band along the main diagonal are not stored to save memory), and sparse (only non-zero entries of a matrix are stroed to save memory) matrices, and for real and complex single, double, long double precisions. It would require 18 versions in Fortran 77 or Fortan 90. Six versions of C code may do it, but will be much less efficient. If one later decides to add a symmetric (only store lower triangular part of a matrix to save memory) matrix storage format, then 6 more versions of Fortan code (for real, complex, and single, double, long double precisions) need be added. The same C++ program for conjugat gradient and GMRES methods still can handle this situation without any change. C++ code of preconditioned conjugat gradient and GMRES methods are given in Chapter 11 (last chapter) of the book, which work for full, banded, sparse, and other matrices in real and complex domains.

C++ has features (compound assignment operators, templates, function objects, high performance computing library such as valarray) that can be faster than Fortran 77 and C. For example, passing a pointer to a function as an argument to another function can be avoided in many C++ programs by using templates, which can improve the speed of execution by a factor of 2 on many compilers and machines. Running time comparisons with C and Fortran style function passing are done in various places of the book.

C++ provides standard libraries on data structures such as vector, set, list, map, stack, queue, valarray, and on algorithms such as sort() and find(). They come with any standard C++ compiler and can be much more efficient, convenient, and portable than codes written a typical or expert programmer. For example, using these libraries, it is much easier to write finite element programs on unstructured grids and grid generation programs in C++ than in Fortran and C. A disussion of these standard libraries and algorithms are given in various chapters of the book.

C++ programs resemble numerical algorithms more than in Fortran or C. For exmaple, we can write v = v1 + v2 for vector addition and v1 = m*v2 for (sparse, banded, or full) matrix-vector multiplication. The C++ code for the conjugate gradient method (for solving linear systems of algebraic equations) looks very much like the algorithm, which enhances readibility and maintainability. Besides, such operator overloading from built-in types to user-defined types can be done without sacrifice of run-time speed (see Chapter 6 of the book).

There is widespread agreement that Kernighan & Richie's introduction to C is one of the best books on any programming language ever written. Sadly, no book on C++ has achieved this distinction. The complexity of the language is mostly to blame. Personally, I am averse to any 1000-page "primer" that aims to explain C++ from scratch up to intermediate level, with plenty of diversions, illustrations of secondary language features and a menagerie of typographic symbols, all the same getting to discuss classes at page 500. Those are better thought of as bloated references. Instead, C++ a third language, and C a second if only because a) C is not for absolute beginners and b) C programming style is often found in C++ legacy code. But if this is the case, the reader can read and understand succinct explanations of the new features of C++, and be quickly reminded of its similarities with C, or warned of the differences.

If you agree with my own preferences, this book is for you. It goes to the point and follows a linear, focused thread. Knowledge of C is not strictly required, but I can't see how can you accept double pointers as your personal saviours if you haven't seen them before. It's rather complete, but not all-encompassing. Topics are discussed clearly and the organizing principles are emphasized first, with the inevitable exceptions coming later. Examples are many. They are sometime thought in C but written in C++, which is no mortal sin. Because of the plain, assured style, and the approach to its subjects, the book reminds me of K&R. Not a small compliment to pay.

The book also offers advice on programming style, mostly with an eye on numerical computing. It can be used a very high-level reference, to be complemented by a comprehensive one (my favorite is C++ in a nutshell). And each advanced subject of C++ deserves its own book, especially templates and metaprogramming. Avoid the "primers".

Summing up, this is not a book for complete beginners, but more a textbook for a course or self-instruction. It's by no means a first and last book on C++. Such book has not been written yet. Know your needs and what you get.

I was required to read this book for a class, and am quite glad I did read it. It proviedes a very good introduction to C++ for those who aren't familiar with it. Even more importantly, however, are the great examples of how to use C++ for Numerical Methods, which makes it a good book for more experienced programmers as well.
